2.8 JPG and PNG files not recognized
I have a problem with 2.8 JPG and PNG files.

I have a Brother MFC-J835DW inkjet printer with an SD slot to read files to print. It will NOT read any JPG or PNG file created with Gimp 2.8.x. The thumbnails show up as a square with a "?" on it. I have 2.8.10 on a Win7 desktop and 2.8.4 on a Linux machine. My Win7 laptop has 2.6.11 and those files work fine. The win7 desktop had 2.6.11 before the (up?)grade and those files were fine too. The Linux machine had 2.6.x at one time and those files also worked fine.

Is this a known problem?

I've been using the GIMP for over 10 years. I've never had a problem like this.

Thanks.

Ok, I have a Brother MFC-J825DW running in PClinuxOS.
Since your printer used to accept files from SD card I think the problem will be the change in Gimp 2.8.x for saving jpeg files to a default progressive mode.

When exporting, go into advanced options and untick progressive.

Top is the SD card I use, formated in my camera and I keep the file names simple and in caps. No progressive mode. Prints DVD's ok. Under that is the Gimp export jpeg dialog.

I do not know about png's as I print these from Gimp.

Second thoughts caveat - I have the printer USB connected, not wireless or network. FWIW
Do you have your printer set up in linux with Gutenprint? Printer not on the Printer list? Not a problem, use a postscript setting and point it at the ppd file. Prints great quality.

MANY thanks!!

The "Progressive" solution worked!

Haven't tried Gutenprint, but will look into it.

On a side note, what DVDs are you using? I like the Verbatim "AquaAce Glossy" but can't find them in Blu-ray. I'm staying away from the LTH technology.

Thanks again.

A comparison between Gimp 2.8.10 (linux) and Gimp 2.6.11 (WinXP) and no real difference in export/save dialogues.

Running a pair of files through Imagemagick does show up one difference
Type in 2.6 is shown as Palette and in 2.8 as Truecolor
Don't know on this one, a bit of research needed.

I use Verbatim all the time. Only DVD, no Blu-ray while TV is still 720HD and Hauppauge analogue capture card still works.
Usage, 98 % full face matt printable, still have a few glossy and matt silver lying around. Gave up with dual-layer, authoring and burning is not a problem, but the variation in DVD players to read these is amazing.

from 2.8
(parasite "png-save-defaults" 1 17 "\60\40\60\40\60\40\60\40\61\40\61\40\61\40\61\40\71")
from 2.6
(parasite "png-save-defaults" 1 17 "\60\40\60\40\60\40\60\40\61\40\61\40\61\40\61\40\71")

As far as I can see the defaults are identical, just as the dialogues are the same.

Repeated this mornings exercise but more carefully using the same base bmp image. Got truecolor in both this time
the file size (compression = 9) is slightly different 2.6 = 195,427 vs. 2.8 = 195,414

IM identify throws this up

those 3 lines different ? - Not sure but I think I read something about this when Gimp 2.8 came out.

RE: 2.8 JPG and PNG files not recognized
Should have tried this earlier.

Copied the gimp 2.8 and 2.6 png files, the same files run through ImageMagick as pngs, A gimp 2.8 uncompressed tif file, all onto my SD card.

None of them show up in the printer SD reader except jpeg.

Had a look throught the printer docs. No mention of acceptable image formats.

Looks like only jpeg will work here.

Thanks for looking at the differences. I couldn't find any reference to specific formats either. I'm in the process of switching Linux distros. Been having problems with Mint Linux and my 835. When I try to print on a DVD, it gives me an error about the cover being open. Also getting 'MFCJ835DW' 'cups-ipp-missing-job-id' error. Have had several probs with Mint.

I have a Hauppauge HD PVR. Works great (hooked to a Win 7 machine). I record lots of sporting events. Files are coming out at around 13 - 14 GB for good quailty, so it's onto a BD.

Thanks again for the Gutenprint tip.
